Can Aromatherapy Help?
So many people suffer from arthritis pain. Scientific researchers believe arthritis pain can be brought on by depression and stress as much as by inflammation or deterioration of joint tissue. Because there are so many variables in creation of the arthritis pain, one method or treatment may not work for everyone. Some have turned to natural methods using aromatherapy essential oils for the following reasons reasons:
1) The properties of some essential oils have been reported to relieve arthritis pain
2) The emotional, spiritual benefits of essential oils also help in reducing stress and sadness.
Essential Oils are not a cure for arthritis, however, Aroma therapists believe essential oils are a wonderful way to provide emotional and mental support that is needed to cope with the pain and discomfort of arthritis - something that many feel is a major factor.
According to ESSENTIAL AROMATHERAPY - A POCKET GUIDE TO ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY, by Susan Worwood, some of the more beneficial oils for arthritis include:
Rosemary, Chamomile, Lavender, Cinnamon, Juniper & Thyme
Please read her book for more information about these oils.
When essential oils are used in a hot compress or blended with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil and used as a massage, the treatment has been reported to be very beneficial in relieving pain and discomfort. One could also add essential oils to a hot bath, or a bucket or large plastic container to soak an extremity. Bath salts would further enhance the experience while providing the additional mineral benefits of the salts. Thorough research should be performed prior to using essential oils. We also recommend consultation with a certified aromatherapist or medical practitioner before beginning any treatment.
PLEASE NOTE: The quality of essential oils is very important. It is in your best interest to obtain first distillation, pure essential oils separately from carrier oils, 1) so that you can control the amount of dilution that suites you best and 2) to provide the most for your money, as undiluted oils have a longer shelf life.
