Are Essential Oils Safe for internal use?

Working at http://www.100pureessentialoils.com, we get this and similar questions quite a bit.
It is not a simple question to answer because essential oils are very powerful, and a little bit goes a long way. You would never need a few undiluted drops of pure essential oils on the tong, or in a glass of water because a few drops of oil can equate to several pounds of material. It would be like eating a pound of flowers, seeds or other organic materials - it doesn't sound too apetizing and probably isn't very good for your system all at once.

Having said that, the federal government has a list of acceptable food additives. Several essential oils are listed. If you use the table as your guide - you will want to find oils that are listed as FS (Substances permitted as optional ingredient in a standardized food), FLAV (Natural flavoring agent), or SP (Spices, other natural seasonings & flavorings)
They are listed here @ http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodIngredientsPackaging/FoodAdditives/ucm191033.htm

Some of the items on this list are: Camomile, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Peppermint, Rosemary, etc...

However, that does not mean that these oils are safe for everyone - as every person is different - and some people may have an adverse reaction to an oil.

Always do your homework first - reading all of the contraindications of every essential oil you plan to use.
Also - Moderation is very important when using essential oils - especially if you plan to use them internally - so use common sense and get in touch with a medical professional before beginning any treatment.

Please also note that we do not advise internal use of essential oils without proper guidance from a professional aromatherapist of medical practitioner. Preferably one who knows your full and current medical history.
